A brand built on the ocean. A platform built for trust.

ICV Tuna Africa needed a brand identity and digital platform that communicated sustainable fishing credentials to international buyers, certification bodies, and regulators. We built the brand system, the certification-facing web platform, and the content architecture.

The Problem

Sustainable fishing certification is worth more than the catch itself — premium buyers pay 40-60% more for certified sustainable tuna.

Sustainable fishing certification is worth more than the catch itself — premium buyers pay 40-60% more for certified sustainable tuna. But certification requires transparent, auditable records of fishing practices, catch volumes, and chain of custody.

ICV Tuna Africa had the fishing practices but not the digital infrastructure to prove it. Their records were paper-based, their brand was minimal, and their pitch to European buyers relied on PDFs with inconsistent formatting.

They came to Fusionwave needing a brand that communicated quality and sustainability, and a web platform that made their certification records accessible and auditable to buyers and certification bodies.

What We Designed

Ocean-grade brand. Enterprise-grade trust.

Ocean palette
Core brand direction
10 weeks
Brand + platform delivery

We ran brand workshops with ICV's founding team and three European buyer interviews. The brand direction: deep ocean depth, minimal and precise — communicating the opposite of industrial fishing. Every visual element was grounded in the African Atlantic coast environment.

What We Built

Certification-ready from day one.

Next.js
Web platform
QR verification
Buyer certification check
Audit trail
ISO-ready records

The web platform is Next.js. Catch records, certification documents, and chain-of-custody logs are structured in a PostgreSQL database with a public-facing verification portal — buyers can verify any batch's certification status with a QR code.

Core Features

What ships in the product.

01

Brand identity

Full brand system: wordmark, icon, colour system, typography, and photography direction — built for print, web, and certification documents.

02

Certification portal

Buyers and certification bodies access catch records, audit logs, and certification status via a public QR-linked portal.

03

Catch record system

Structured digital records of each catch — vessel, date, location, weight, species, method — feeding the certification audit trail.

04

Chain of custody

End-to-end traceability from ocean catch to export document. Every handoff point is logged and time-stamped.

05

Buyer-facing web

Clean, multilingual buyer-facing site with product catalogue, sustainability story, and certification download centre.

06

Document centre

All certification documents, audit reports, and compliance records in one searchable, downloadable portal.

07

Impact reporting

Auto-generated quarterly impact reports — catch volumes, sustainability metrics, community employment — for ESG buyers.

08

Multilingual

English, French, and Portuguese — the three primary languages of ICV's target buyers and regulatory bodies.

09

Offline data entry

Catch records entered on vessels with poor connectivity sync to the platform when the vessel returns to port.

The first European buyer we pitched with the new brand and platform signed a 12-month contract on the spot. They said it was the most professional presentation they'd seen from an African supplier.

Challenges Solved

What it took.

  • Certification-grade data integrity. Certification bodies scrutinise data quality. We implemented append-only catch records with field-level validation, GPS coordinate requirements, and a supervisor sign-off flow before any record enters the audit trail.
  • Offline data capture on fishing vessels. Vessels are at sea for days with no connectivity. We built an offline-first data entry app (Flutter) that runs on a ruggedised tablet on the vessel — records queue locally and sync when the boat returns to port WiFi.
  • Multilingual regulatory documents. Certification documentation has to be accurate in English, French, and Portuguese. We built a translation management system where legal and compliance documents are maintained in three languages with version control.
  • QR-linked verification buyers trust. Buyers needed verification that didn't rely on ICV's own word. Each batch gets a QR code that links to a public page showing the batch's certification status, sourced directly from the audit database — not a PDF they could edit.
